Last Of The V8 Interceptors
I’ve decided to buy one last PowerBook before we all join the ‘Intel Inside’ crowd…
It’s to replace my ageing 12" PowerBook which is suffering from a whole series of problems including but not limited to a broken latch, flakey CD writer and most annoying of all, a very loud fan (which was what tipped me over the edge).
I could probably have waited (assuming I wasn’t driven insane by errant fan noise) but ultimately decided not to. I’m sure the Intel PowerBook will rock. Like a lot of people I’ve lusted after the odd Sony Vaio in my time so the idea of Apple making super-slim laptops is very appealing…
“…not pointing the finger…”
It’s just that being an early-adopter has lost it’s appeal. I don’t think it’s a sign of approaching maturity, rather I’ve just been stung too many times. I’m not pointing the finger at Apple here, it’s an issue that affects most manufacturers. I’m just done with paying for the pleasure of being a beta tester, certainly at this price point anyway.
A couple of revisions down the line when the dust has settled I’ll dutifully line up and get my Intel PowerBook, that should also give Adobe time to get the Intel native binaries of Photoshop out the door…
“…an epic tale of love and triumph…”
There are plenty of other good reasons to pick up this years PowerBook. They’re covered in an extremely in-depth review by John Gurber so if you’re thinking about making a purchase yourself you might want to read it. I call it a review but that doesn’t even begin to do it justice. It’s an epic tale of love and triumph tempered by sorrow for a passing era. People will sing songs and write poems about this review, mark my words.
If you’re not in the mood to read the full review then this has got to be my favourite line, “the current 15-inch PowerBook G4 is an appropriate send-off to one of the best products in Apple’s history”. Amen to that…
You can buy a PowerBook right now on the Apple Store (UK).
