The Ukapi Journal
Despite rumours to the contrary print is alive and well and I’m partially to blame…
This is the fourth volume of the Ukapi Journal and the most accomplished so far. I’ve learnt a lot creating the preceding three volumes and feel extremely pleased with this one. My role has covered quite a few stops including copy-editing, design, artworking and even print buying.
The major challenge was learning to use Adobe InDesign or at least I assumed it would be. The reality was thankfully somewhat easier. It’s the spiritual successor to PageMaker which I used ‘back in the day’ and a pleasure compared to my brief experience with Xpress. The interface is fairly intuative especially if you have some knowledge of Illustrator. I managed to get the basics down in an afternoon. The subtlties are still making themselves known, learning about baseline grids was a revelation.

Artwork was thankfully painless. One colour on the outside, one on the inside, no registration to worry about. The printer we’re using accepts PDFs which means no font worries either. InDesign exports directly to PDF and provides a whole lot of useful presets. It all seems so much easier than I remember.
“…much easier than I remember…”
I won’t tell you too much about Ukapi except that it’s short for United Kingdom Association of Psychotherapy Integration and they put out two volumes of their journal a year (amongst other things). They have a web site which will tell you more if you’re feeling inquisitive.
